KANKARIA LAKE
Kankaria Lake is one of the most popular family destinations in Ahmedabad because of its soothing and undisturbed waters. The man made reservoir was constructed in 1451 by Sultan Qutb-ud Din Ahmed Shah II of the Muzaffarid dynasty, which ruled the western regions of India – especially Gujarat, from 1391 to 1583, for nearly 200 years. Kankaria Lake is located in Maninagar, in the city center. The lakefront now has many public attractions such as a toy train, zoo, mini golf course and also hot air balloon rides! KAMLA NEHRU ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN
Situated right next to the Kankaria Lake, the Kamla Nehru Zoo was established by Rueben David, a self-taught veterinarian in 1951. It was one of the first zoological parks to be built in India, post-independence. The Ahmedabad Zoo is spread over an area of 21 acres and houses a large variety of mammals, birds and reptiles.
There are nearly 500 mammals, 2000 birds and over a 100 reptiles here, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. INDRODA DINOSAUR AND FOSSIL PARK
India’s very own Jurassic Park is here! The vast park on the banks of the Sabarmati River is very famous for its large life-like dinosaur replica models. The expansive park spreads for over 400 hectares and is located in Gandhinagar, a drive of about 40 minutes at a distance of 25 kilometers from Ahmedabad.
The western part of the park is the Indroda Nature Reserve, while the eastern part is home to the Wilderness Park. The man made fossil park is the only dinosaur museum in the whole country, the first one ever to be set up solely dedicated to dinosaurs. Some of the prominent giants on display here include the T-Rex, Megalosaurus, Titanosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, Iguanodon etc, along with their respective information such as behavioral characteristics and period of existence.
The park holds eggs, bones and well preserved fossils excavated by archaeologists and paleontologists in Balasinor and Raiyoli. Gujarat is said to be home of some of the best preserved and largest habitats of these giants when they existed hundreds of million years ago. The wilderness park is the site of hundreds of animals including nilgais, peafowls, langurs etc. A large fossilized skeleton of a blue whale is also on display. SABARMATI ASHRAM
Every Indian is bound to have heard the words ‘Sabarmati Ashram’, atleast once in their lifetime. Located in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad, on the banks of the Sabarmati river, Sabarmati Ashram is one of the most iconic and historic places related to the Indian independence movement. It was started in 1917 and was one of the many residences of Mahatma Gandhi – also the one in which he spent a majority of time during his final years.
The ashram is now declared a national monument by the Government of India because of its historical importance, since it was from here that Gandhiji initiated the Dandi March (Salt Satyagraha). A museum is now housed here in the premises and regular tours are conducted to educate people about the struggles of pre-independence life in India. This is an educational and informative trip, one that will attract the curiosities of everyone, especially kids.
SIDI BASHIR MOSQUE (JHULTA MINAR / SHAKING MINARETS)
Although the origins of builders of the Sidi Bashir Mosque in Ahmedabad is not correctly known, it is said to have been built in 1452. Where once a fully operational mosque stood, now stands only two minarets and an arched central gateway. They are the tallest minarets in Ahmedabad. It is situated very close to the railway station, just off Kalupur Road. The mosque was destroyed during a war between the Maratha empire and the Gujrat Sultanate in 1753.
The most amazing characteristic of the structure, which now lies in ruins, is the formidable acoustic feature where either minaret starts vibrating or shaking when one of them is gently shaken. During this phenomena, the connecting passage of the arched gateway remains free of vibration! The background of this astonishing mechanism Is still not known. THE CALICO MUSEUM OF TEXTILES
The unique Calico Textile Museum is devoted to displaying the rich history of Indian textiles in the past 5 centuries. It is one of the premier textile museums in India and definitely deserves a visit. The museum is located in the Shahibaug area and is maintained by the Sarabhai Foundation.
The Calico Museum was established post-independence in 1949 as the city was a rich hub for the textile industry. Few displays of the museum include Mughal clothing from 15th to 19th centuries, religious textiles, traditional embroideries of the region and dyed clothing. Other galleries have bronze items, historic miniature paintings, art and sculpture of the Jains, craftwork etc. It is a great place to visit with your kids and family, to have fun and be awed by the vast collection!
AUTO WORLD VINTAGE CAR MUSEUM
The Auto World Vintage Car Museum is paradise for automobile lovers. The car and automotive industry collection houses a wide range of top class vintage automobiles, motorcycles, utility vehicles, buggies and special antique pieces. The museum is present in the north-eastern fringes of the city, off the Sardar Patel Ring Road and can be easily accessed via public transport.

BHADRA FORT
Bhadra Fort is one of the best known and prominent landmarks of the city of Ahmedabad. The fort was built in 1411 during the rule of the Muzaffarid dynasty by Sultan Ahmed Shah I – after whom the city was named. The large fortification is situated in the old walled city of Ahmedabad, which was recently declared as an UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historic significance.
The royal fort was home to the king’s queens, their escorts and the king himself. It consists of wide garden areas, large gateways, royal squares, beautifully carved windows and balconies, an imperial court etc. It is an important place to learn about the region’s history and culture.
SARKHEJ ROZA
Situated in the quiet village of Markaba, lies the elegantly magnificent mosque and mausoleum of Sarkhej Roza. The complex is located in the Markaba village, 8 kilometers south-west of Ahmedabad. The Indo-Saracenic architectural form is a beautiful composition of Islamic, Jain and Hindu styles.
The tomb complex is dedicated to Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh, who was a Sufi saint and a close companion of Sultan Ahmed Shah I. Upon his death, the sultan demanded that a mausoleum be built in honor of the great saint. Le Corbusier called Sarkhej Roza as the ‘Acropolis of Ahmedabad’, in comparison to its elegance to the world famous Acropolis of Athens. Sarkhej is now a lovely place to spend some quality solitude time. It is a short drive away and serves as the perfect getaway from the busyness of city life.

AMDAVAD NI GUFA
Gufa means a cave in Hindi and Gujarati and Amdavad refers to the city’s Indianized name. The contemporary architecture used in building the structure draws inspiration from a number of historical sites such as Stonehenge, Ajanta & Ellora Caves and Girnar Jain Temples. It was designed and constructed under the supervision of Balkrishna Vithaldas Joshi, one of the foremost figures in Indian architecture.
